The longtime President of the John Knox Village Board of Directors, Mr. Frank H. Furman Jr. was honored at the Village last week during the dedication of Furman Square. Approximately 200 Village residents, employees, business associates, family and friends attended the dedication.
Mr. Furman joined the John Knox Village Board of Directors in 1979. He directed the Board as President for twenty-five of those years, and recently retired from that post.
During his tenure, the Village has grown to be the second largest continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Florida, and the sixth largest single site CCRC in the nation.
Addressing those in attendance, Mr. Bob Scharmann, President/CEO of John Knox Village, cited the many accomplishments achieved by Mr. Furman.
“Frank H. Furman has been tireless in his dedication to John Knox Village,” Mr. Scharmann said. “The dedication of Furman Square is our way of giving back to Mr. Furman for the countless hours of service he has given to John Knox Village.”
Furman Square is located at the heart of John Knox Village, adjacent to Cassels Tower, the Lakeside Dining Room, and Rex Foster Lake. The fountain, landscaping and clock tower will serve as the focal point of the Village for decades to come.
The plaque unveiled at the entrance to Furman Square describes the Village’s thanks to his dedication. “In grateful appreciation of Frank H. Furman Jr.’s leadership during his thirty-one years as a Member of the Board of Directors and twenty-five year Presidency: the Board of Directors of John Knox Village is proud to recognize his contributions by dedicating this square in his honor.
Thanks to Mr. Furman’s vision, John Knox Village is among the premier retirement communities in America. His uncompromising and steadfast commitment to excellence has enriched the quality of life for our Residents and employees.
Mr. Furman, we thank you and dedicate this square as a lasting reminder to all, of your principled service.

John Knox Village is a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community (CCRC) which opened in 1967 to provide seniors aged 62 and over, a comprehensive life-care community where they have whatever care is needed for life. John Knox Village is located at 651 S.W. Sixth Street in Pompano Beach, just east of I-95 and south of Atlantic Boulevard.
